(1969) - Women in the Sudan - Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim
Ibrahim was the president of the Sudanese Women's Union (SWU), and had been for over a decade and was also Sudan's first woman Member of Parliament. Prior to the SWU, which was the largest women's organization, there were many ongoing movements for and against women having equal opportunities. It promoted socialistic ideals in a male-dominated society. Through this article, Ibrahim confronted the lack of rights for women in Sudan. It was long portrayed as the fault of religion, yet she used the very same religion to prove that their agenda was shaped by cultural norms and personal agendas.
One of the great tasks facing the Union was how to convince the women to unite around socialist slogans. Economic freedom and political rights would not be attained without an ideologically united organisation.
