This workshop in an introductory course for those that are looking to get a baseline understanding of core foundational concepts and frameworks pertaining to anti-Black racism

Workshop Description

Situated within the values and frameworks of anti-racism, the session explores the historical foundation of anti-Black racism within Canada and its present day implications on Black communities. Through an intersectional lens, participants will cultivate an understanding of the internal, interpersonal and institutional ramifications of anti-Black racism as it overlaps with other identities and experiences. Unpacking the “meanwhile in Canada” narrative, participants will develop anti-racism strategies to confront the unique challenges of addressing anti-Blackness within a Canadian context. Microaggressions, power-sharing and intergenerational trauma are key components to the case studies and personal narratives.

Learning Outcomes

  • understand the social, cultural, economic and political nature of anti Blackness
  • recognize contemporary and historical manifestations of anti-Black racism within Canada
  • understand that anti-Black racism is an internal interpersonal and institutional oppression
  • explore strategies to address various forms of anti-Black racism.

Participant Expectations

Participants can expect to engage in small breakout discussions as well as a lecture style presentation. Participants can keep cameras on/off and engage as desired for the lecture part of the session and are encouraged to actively participate in the breakout rooms. Participants will have a break in the middle of the session and there are some pauses to hold space for reflection.
