Student L.E.A.D Program: Leadership, Engagement & Anti-Racism Development
Interested in building your anti-racism competence and response literacy?
What is the L.E.A.D program?
The Student Anti-Racism Leadership, Education and Anti-Racism Development (L.E.A.D) Program is a pilot student leadership cohort developed by the University of Waterloo Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism (EDI-R).
How can L.E.A.D. help?
L.E.A.D. was developed in response to questions and gaps identified by students, including:
-
How can I respond to racism-related and identity-based harms?
-
How do I navigate campus supports and resources?
-
How can I build connections with students from diverse communities?
-
How can institutional knowledge be carried forward as student leadership changes?
What will you explore?
L.E.A.D combines practical learning with conversations about the issues students are seeing across campus. Together, you’ll explore:
- How racism and other forms of harm show up between people and within institutions
- Your rights under the Ontario Human Rights Code, including the duty to accommodate
- Ways to respond to harm, including institutional supports and referral pathways
- Response literacy and self-advocacy
- How repeated harmful behaviour can affect the climate of a classroom, club or other campus space
Who is this program for?
The L.E.A.D program is for all student aspiring and existing leaders on campus who want to build their capacity for anti-racism, community engagement, and peer support.
E.g.
- Racialized student leaders
- Student society and student group/club leaders
- WUSA student employees
- Advocacy and peer support leaders
Join L.E.A.D
The program brings together 10–12 students for four discussion-based sessions, totalling approximately eight hours over the term. Participants are expected to attend all four sessions.
