The University of Waterloo is pleased to accept applications from excellent Costa Rican students who will be applying for the CONAPE scholarship loan program.
The University of Waterloo is a member of the CALDO consortium, an association of Canada’s leading research universities committed to international education. CALDO is currently working with these Latin American countries: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Panama.
Scholarship overview
To foster cooperation and enhance the links between the CONAPE and CALDO member Universities by providing shared financing for talented Costa Rican students admitted to research graduate degree programs at the University of Waterloo, within the framework of a Joint Graduate Loan Program.
CONAPE will provide the loan recipients with the amount requested to finance the program for students offered admission to Waterloo. To receive the benefits offered by Waterloo as part of the Joint Graduate Loan Program, the minimum amount requested must be at least 75% of the total amount of the program's tuition fees and living costs.
What does the CONAPE graduate loan program cover?
- Graduate Loan Program that will provide at minimum 75% of the total tuition and living costs.
- Travel and health insurance may be included at the student’s request.
Benefits from the University of Waterloo:
- PhD programs
- Domestic tuition for up to 4 (four) years of full-time study.
- Research Master’s Programs
- Depending on the program and on a competitive basis, Teaching Assistantships (TAs) may be made available.
- Minimum funding guarantees are available from some programs.
Eligible programs
- Doctoral studies for up to 4 (four) years.
- Research master’s studies for up to 2 (two) years.
English for Academic Success (EFAS)
- Not covered under this agreement
Master's research funding
- The Loan Program provides at least 75% of tuition and living costs for two years or six academic terms.
- International tuition will be assessed.
- To qualify for this funding, the student must receive some University of Waterloo benefits, as noted above.
Doctoral funding
- The Loan Program provides at least 75% of tuition and living costs for four years or 12 terms.
- Domestic tuition will be assessed.
CONAPE application procedure
- Visit conape.go.cr for program information and deadlines.
- Applicants contact universities and submit online applications and supporting documents.
- Applicants apply through CONAPE, including Waterloo’s Offer of Admission.
- CONAPE confirms the scholarship.
Applying to Waterloo
- Minimum admission requirements include an 8/10 or 8/100 overall standing (GPA).
- Certification of English language proficiency (ELP) through one of the accepted examinations is required.
- Prospective graduate students apply online.
- In the International Agreements section, select Costa Rica: CONAPE
Important
- The sponsorship documentation must detail the approved program, financial support amount and the number of years the funding has been granted (a minimum of two years for a master’s research program and a minimum of four years for a PhD program).
- Please refer to Arranging your fees with a third-party sponsorship on the Finance website for the information required in the official sponsorship documentation. If there is any change in your funding situation, the University of Waterloo may re-evaluate your Offer of Admission, and reserves the right to withdraw your Offer of Admission or withdraw you from your graduate program.
