World Water Day 2026

Friday, March 20, 2026

The Water Institute at the University of Waterloo celebrated World Water Day 2026 with a free, full-day conference focused on water equity, environmental justice, and innovative water research. Held on March 20, 2026, the event brought together students, researchers, and community members for keynote presentations, research showcases, panel discussions, award ceremonies, and networking opportunities.

The conference opened with a keynote address by Dr. Katie Meehan, Professor of Environmental Justice at King's College London, who explored the hidden social and economic costs of water poverty. Her presentation examined the growing issue of infrastructure inequality in wealthy nations and highlighted how inadequate water services disproportionately impact vulnerable populations.

Attendees then had the opportunity to engage with emerging water research during the Student Research Showcase, featuring innovative projects from University of Waterloo students. The event also included the presentation of the 2026 Collaborative Water Program Alumni Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the water sector.

A panel discussion titled Water Equity and Shared Responsibility: Intersectional Perspectives from Research and Practice brought together experts from academia and international organizations to discuss how factors such as gender, race, and socioeconomic status influence access to safe water, sanitation, health, and safety. Panelists shared both Canadian and global perspectives on water inequities and reflected on the challenges and successes of conducting equity-focused water research.

The conference concluded with closing remarks, awards, and a networking social hosted by the Society of the Water Institute Graduate Students (SWIGS). Throughout the day, participants explored the importance of addressing water inequality and fostering collaborative solutions to advance water sustainability and equity for all.
