Due to safety concerns of the COVID19 virus, we have decided to plan a virtual 2021 GARLS Symposium scheduled for May 6. We are saddened by the current situation, however as a department we feel this is the best course of action. Our theme for the one-day virtual symposium is “A time for (re)connection after a year of (dis)connection”. We look forward to re-connecting with our peers and having our keynote speaker Dr. Fenton Litwiller join us on this day.

Primary objectives of the symposium
- To offer students the opportunity to present their research and ideas in a supportive, inclusive atmosphere.
- To advance the state of knowledge about leisure, recreation, sport, and tourism through a public forum of shared research.
- To facilitate scholarly communication among students and faculty interested in leisure research, and to create the opportunity for constructive criticism and debate.
2021 Keynote
This year we invited Dr. Fenton Litwiller from the University of Manitoba as the Keynote speaker and Fern Delamere Memorial Lecture to commemorate the 28th year of the Symposium, as well as part of the Hallman Lecture Series. This lecture is supported by the Lyle S. Hallman Professional Endowment Fund.
Dr. Fenton Litwiller is a leisure scholar and Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Litwiller's research program emphasizes the use of critical inquiry to investigate inclusive recreation environments. They are currently developing a project driven by interrelated research questions about gender, youth, sexuality, and play by connecting 2SLGBTQQI youth to a drag performance and genderplay workshop. In the workshop, mentors work with youth to explore gender through make up, movement to music, and costuming. Litwiller is also working on a project to create a measure for use in population level surveys like the census that reflects current understandings of sexual orientation and gender identity and is inclusive of non-binary people.
Presentations and posters are either completed research studies, or works in progress. Case studies, philosophical pieces, literature reviews, conceptual development papers, and completed empirical studies are all included. Abstracts are subject to a blind review process. Presentations will be 15 minutes with discussion, and posters will be displayed throughout the conference, including dedicated poster discussion time. We invite graduate students (and senior undergraduate students pursuing research) interested in any aspect of leisure, recreation, sport, and tourism research to attend the symposium, and to take advantage of this unique opportunity for scholarly and professional growth.

2021 GARLS Symposium social
The Symposium Social hosted by Graduate Association of Recreation and Leisure Studies (GARLS) is normally held following the closing of the Symposium to celebrate a day of great research discussion. The 2021 social is cancelled due to the rising safety concerns of the COVID 19 virus.
