The GSA, in co-operation with the Graduate House, will be once again holding our Pub Lecture Series, sponsored by Beau's.

The GSA would like to welcome Dr. Raymond Laflamme as our second speaker at Pub Lecture Series this term. It will be taking place at the Grad House, November 6th at 4pm. Details below:

A Window to the Quantum World

Two pillars of science and technology in the 20th century have been
quantum mechanics and information theory. Although they had historical
paths with only small overlap, the decrease in the size of transistors
point to a stronger correlated future. Moreover, it has been discovered
in the last 15 years that manipulating information using quantum
mechanics allows to perform tasks that are impossible or intractable
using the classical laws of physics. I will give a review of quantum
information science and technology,  from its motivation to recent developments,
emphasizing the difficulties that have been overcome and the ones ahead
on the way to build quantum information processors. I will also
describe the effort at Waterloo in this area.

Please join us for a beverage and our second informal lecture at the Graduate House this term! Our next talk will be given by Dr. Lee Smolin from the Perimeter Institute, November 20th at 4pm. Details to come!
