What is a postdoctoral scholar?
A postdoctoral scholar (postdoc) is an individual who holds a doctoral degree and is seeking further training in an area of research to support their career objective of becoming an independent researcher, either inside or outside of academia.
How are postdoc positions structured?
Postdoctoral scholars are defined by clear guidelines that ensure postdoc appointments provide structured research training, professional development, and transitional career support. These guidelines also set standards for salary, contract length, and compliance with Tri-Agency and federal requirements.
How are postdoc positions classified?
Postdoctoral scholars are a distinct employment category, separate from research associates and research assistants. At Waterloo, postdocs are classified into three appointment types: postdoctoral scholar employees (type A), postdoctoral scholar employees (type B), and postdoctoral scholar associates.
