Sauer Family Award

HelenLouise (Schellenberg) Sauer (July 6, 1947 - April 30, 1996) was born in Leamington, Ontario, the third of four children of William Schellenberg and Johanna Founk. Her parents were of the Russian Mennonite tradition having left Russia in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

HelenLouise was raised on the family farm with her siblings and with the extended family living nearby. Her childhood centred on the Schellenberg and Founk families, the farm and the church community (Faith Mennonite, Leamington).

HelenLouise lived in residence at Conrad Grebel College in 1966-1968 while studying Psychology at the University of Waterloo. At Grebel, HelenLouise developed life long friendships, learned the importance of the gift of life, developed her talent for having fun and explored and matured her own faith beliefs.
From the Grebel community in 1970, HelenLouise helped found the K-W House Churches, a worship community affiliated with the Mennonite Conference of Eastern Canada. It was in the community that she worshipped for the rest of her life.

This fund is a celebration of HelenLouise’s life, a life shaped by her experiences at Conrad Grebel College.
