The Jean Caya Music Award

This entrance award supports and promotes prospective students who demonstrate musical and academic ability, and who intend to major in Music. An audition is required. Recipients will be chosen giving preference to the following criteria:

  • Students pursuing a Music major or joint-honours.
  • Students enrolled in a music course at Conrad Grebel University College.
  • Demonstrated musical and academic ability (instrumental, vocal, research).
  • Contribution to the music program of the college.

Size of Award

Two awards of approximately $2,500 will be given annually for four years to the successful applicants.

Rudolf and Hedwig Rempel Music Award

This entrance award supports and promotes prospective students who demonstrate musical and academic ability, and who intend to major in Music. The award will be used to attract gifted students into the Faculty of Arts (first year) and acceptance into the Music program (in the second year). Normally a student will receive 25% of the award in each of their four years of study. An audition is required. Recipients will be chosen giving preference to the following criteria:

  • Students who are pursuing a Music major or joint-honours.
  • Students enrolled in music at Conrad Grebel University College and holding a 75% average.
  • Contribution to the Music program of the college.
  • Students holding a current contract as a resident or associate student with the college.

Size of Award

Two awards of approximately $2,500 will be given annually for four years to the successful applicants.

Agnes Giesbrecht Choral Music Scholarship

This award supports and promotes choral music and training among students enrolled in the Music Program at Conrad Grebel. The applicant will have a strong academic record, be actively involved in the Music Program, possess excellent vocal skills, and demonstrate a keen interest in choral music, including the Russian Mennonite choral music tradition. The recipient will be a member of the Chapel Choir and will serve as assistant to the Director of the Chapel Choir.

Size of Award

The award is approximately $900.

Clemens Scholarships in Music

Each year, these scholarships are given to general and honours music majors or to joint-honours music majors who are entering or continuing studies towards a degree in music. The following criteria for scholarships will be considered: academic excellence, achievement in performance (Music Studio course), and overall contribution to the music program (participation in Grebel-organized ensembles, recitals or chamber music). At least two music courses per term are required for recipients of music scholarships. Nominations are normally made by the members of the Music faculty.

Size of Award 

Up to three awards of approximately $700.


The Abner Martin Music Scholarship

One award annually.

This award is given by the Menno Singers to one student who will be enrolled in a full-time music major or minor program at the undergraduate level; is affiliated with a Mennonite Church Eastern Canada (MCEC) congregation; and has demonstrated involvement and proficiency in musical activities in church and community. 

Size of Award

The amount awarded varies but has been over $3,000 in recent years.


Evanov Radio Group Music Award

This award supports a Canadian student enrolled in the Music program (major or minor) at the University of Waterloo at Conrad Grebel University College who demonstrates financial need by qualifying for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).

Size of Award

One award of approximately $1,000.


Helen (Liz) Lane Music and Culture Award

This award support travel expenses for students who want to participate in a University of Waterloo "Music and Culture" travel course (MUSIC 355). Recipients will be chosen giving preference to the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in Music and Culture course for credit Music 355 and,
  • Financial need, will be given priority and,
  • Demonstrated involvement in music program (eg. music majors and minors).

Size of Award

Two awards of approximately $600.

The Music and Culture Award

The number and amounts of the award vary.

This award supports music students who want to participate in a University of Waterloo "Music and Culture" travel course (MUSIC 355). Recipients will be nominated by the Department of Music from among students who are enrolled in MUSIC 355 and who have submitted letters of interest. Recipients must be involved in the Music program. Financial needs will be given priority.

The Helen Martens Choral Music Award 

This award is for students enrolled in one of the Music department choirs (e.g. Chamber, University or Chapel choirs. Choristers who exhibit a passion for choral music and demonstrate vocal excellence in choral singing. Choir members who show leadership skills in rehearsals and concert preparation. 

Recipients will be chosen giving preference to the following criteria in order of priority:

a. Students enrolled in one of the Music Department choirs (e.g. Chamber, University or Chapel choirs),

b. Choristers who exhibit a passion for choral music and demonstrate vocal excellence in choral singing,

c. Choir members who show leadership skills in rehearsals and concert preparation,

d. Preference may be given to students who are:

  • Enrolled in our have completed courses in Conducting (i.e. Music 222 or 322) 
  • Pursuing a Major or Minor in Music,
  • In the Church Music and Worship program,
  • Living in the residence or apartments at Conrad Grebel.

One award of approx. $1000

Judy Dyck Music Volunteerism Award

The Award is to support students who are involved in the Music Department and demonstrate a spirit of volunteerism for the Music programs at the College.

Recipients will be chosen giving preference to the following criteria:

  • Students enrolled as Music Majors or Minors and,
  • Students who are in upper years and,
  • Students who demonstrate active engagement with activities in the Music program such as;
    • Volunteering to help at concerts, recitals, auditions, Musical productions etc.
    • Exhibiting leadership in Music Society or other student activities;
    • Participating in Music Live/Learn program.

One award of approx. $1000

John and Erma Stutzman String Scholarship Award

The Stutzman String Scholarship is for students enrolled in a studio course in the Music Department who exhibit excellence in string musicianship.

Recipients will be chosen giving preference to the following criteria in order of priority:

  • Students who have enrolled in Music Studio for a stringed instrument
  • Students who have completed an entrance or studio audition
  • Students who have demonstrated excellence in musicianship and ability to perform on a stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello, double bass)
  • Preference may be given to students who are:
    • pursuing a major or minor in Music
    • living in the residence or apartments at Conrad Grebel

Size of Award

Amount: up to $500 each
