Peace and Conflict Studies Awards

Note: The award descriptions shown below are also present on the application form. 


William Dick PACS Field Study Award

This award supports and promotes the Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) Field Study program among students at Conrad Grebel University College (CGUC) and those pursuing studies at the University of Waterloo. Financial support for students will also aid the work of the agencies for which they volunteer. Recipients will be chosen using the following criteria:

  • Students pursuing a PACS concentration.
  • Students were accepted for the PACS Field Study program and placement with a non-governmental organization that does not provide adequate funding.
  • Students holding at least an upcoming one-term residence contract at the college, with consideration given to students who have had at least 2 previous terms in residence, may be given priority.
  • Students with financial needs, may be given priority.

Size of Award

Awards vary between $500 to $3,000 depending on the type and location of the internship.

Becky Frey Student Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in the PACS program who has demonstrated financial need and scholastic abilities. Recipients will be chosen based on the following criteria: 

  • A student who is now in their second year or third year of studies who will return and pursue further studies at the University of Waterloo in the next academic year.
  • A student who has formally enrolled in an PACS Plan (Major or Minor)
  • A student who has demonstrated financial need.
  • A student who has demonstrated scholastic ability.
  • *Grebel residents may be given priority*

Size of Award

Up to two scholarships of approximately $1,000.

Mary and Walter Hougham PACS Award

This award was established to provide financial support for students studying PACS at Conrad Grebel University College who have demonstrated financial need. Recipients will be chosen giving preference to the following criteria:

  • Students enrolled in the PACS program at Grebel (major, minor, or diploma).
  • Students who have financial need and qualify for OSAP
  • Students who demonstrate involvement in and commitment to the PACS program.

Size of Award

Up to three awards of approximately $1,500.

The Vic and Rita Krueger Family PACS Award

This award supports first-year students intending to major in PACS, who qualify for OSAP and demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of the PACS program. Recipients will be chosen giving preference to the following criteria:

  • Students enrolled in a PACS core course.
  • Students intending to pursue a PACS major.
  • Students who qualify for OSAP funding.
  • Students who demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of the PACS program (through a letter of application that outlines personal experience in peace issues, study goals and long term career aspirations).

Size of Award

Two awards of approximately $1,000.

Mennonite Central Committee Peace Award/PACS Internships

These awards are available to students pursuing a PACS plan who have been accepted to a Field Studies course. 


Elliot I. McLoughry Fund Scholarship

Recipients of this award must be PACS students who are making outstanding contributions to the PACS program through scholarly achievement in courses or research, and/or leadership in student peace organizations. Recipients are chosen based on the following criteria:

  • A student formally enrolled in a PACS Plan or Concentration
  • A student who has demonstrated scholastic ability 
  • A students who has demonstrated leadership in PACS related concerns. 

Size of Award

One scholarship of approximately $500.


Peter C. and Elisabeth Williams Memorial Fund Scholarship

This award supports the scholarly and field study work of students in the PACS program who promote peace and peaceful relations between people and nations. Recipients must be students who are contributing to the PACS program through scholarly achievement in courses or field work. They are chosen based on the following criteria: 

  • Students enrolled in a PACS plan.
  • Demonstrated scholastic ability and commitment to peace and peacemaking.

Size of Award

Two awards of approximately $500. 


Lina Wohlgemut Bursary

This award offers assistance to encourage and support students from Third World and developing countries who expect to return to their home country to serve/work there, or students interested in service in the Third World or Developing countries. Recipients are chosen based on fulfillment of at least one of the bursary criteria in order of priority:

  • Developing World student in PACS planning to return to his/her home country;
  • Developing World student at Grebel planning to return to his/her home country;
  • Student interested in service in the Developing World;
  • Student interested in service within the context of the Christian Church.

Size of Award

Up to two awards of approximately $1,000.

PACS 391 Certificate Program Bursary 

This award offers financial assistance to students with a confirmed place in designated Conflict Management Certificate Workshops. 

Certain conditions apply:

  • Student is a PACS major or minor term 3A or above
  • Student has permission from the Academic Advisor to enroll
  • Student is aware there are additional costs (in excess of the bursary and tuition)
  • Student is responsible for the full workshop fee (including bursary) in the event the student completes the workshop but does not complete the academic component.

Size of Award

Up to $400 per workshop (maximum two applications per student)
