Master of Theological Studies Awards

The Jane Plas Scholarship Award

This award is for students in the MTS program who have demonstrated academic excellence, are committed to academic and community life and have completed at least half of the MTS program requirements. The recipients are chosen based on the following criteria: 

  • Students who have demonstrated academic excellence based on cumulative achievement in the Theological Studies program.
  • Students who have completed at least half of the Theological Studies program requirements at the time of application.
  • Students who have demonstrated commitment to the quality of academic and community life in the graduate Theological Studies program. 

Size of Award

The award is approximately $1,500.

Emerson and Elsie McDowell Theological Studies Scholarship

This award is in recognition of Emerson and Elsie McDowell’s commitment to the ministry of the church, vision for ecumenism and support of the Masters in Theological Studies (MTS) program in the College. The award is for students in the MTS program who have demonstrated academic excellence, interest in exploring ministry, and financial need. Recipients are chosen based on the following criteria: 

  • Students enrolled in good standing in the Master of Theological Studies program who have demonstrated an interest in exploring ministry
  • MTS students who have an entry average of at least 80% or have achieved an average of 80% at Conrad Grebel University College in the MTS program
  • MTS students who have demonstrated financial need

The award amount is approximately $1,000.

Magdalena Coffman Scholarship

This scholarship supports MTS students who demonstrate scholastic ability and financial need.

Size of Award

The scholarship is several awards of approximately $500.


Women of MCEC Theological Studies Award

This award provides direct financial support to Mennonite women interested in a church related vocation enrolled in the MTS program. Priority is given to those with financial need.

Size of Award

Typically, the award is worth approximately $500-$1,000.


Jacob H. Janzen Memorial Award

This award is for students doing graduate research on Mennonite faith, history or culture, or students preparing for Christian ministry.

Size of Award

The award is approximately $500-1,000.


The Clifford Snyder Memorial Bursary

This bursary assists students who are continuing their pastoral and leadership training for service in the Mennonite church, or other churches, relating primarily, but not exclusively, to Latin America.

Size of Award

Several awards of approximately $500.


The Reimer Scholarship in Theological Studies

This award is offered to a new student beginning full-time in the MTS program who has demonstrated academic excellence. Priority will be given to students entering the thesis option whose primary area of research is theology, especially Mennonite theology.

Size of Award

One award of $5,000 over two years.


The Stephen Family Theological Studies Entrance Award

This award provides financial support for students who demonstrate good academic standing and who qualify for OSAP funding. Priority is given to those in their first term of study.

Size of Award

The award is approximately $1,500.


A. James Reimer Award for MTS

This award provides support to full-time students who demonstrate good academic ability and who qualify for OSAP funding.

Size of Award

The award amount is variable.


Mennonite Diversity Award

This award is designed to make an educational experience at Conrad Grebel University College accessible to Mennonite students from culturally diverse backgrounds. The intention is to create a student body at the College that is more reflective of the cultural diversity of the present and future Mennonite Church in Canada. Recipients are chosen based on the following criteria: 

  • Students who are, or whose parents are, new Canadians (since 1975) and attend a Mennonite church.
  • Aboriginal students who attend a Mennonite church.

Size of Award

Typically, the award amounts to $5,000 or $10,000 per Master of Theological Studies student per year.

The Karin Packull Anabaptist Studies Award

This award supports and promotes Anabaptist studies among undergraduate and graduate students who show an interest in Anabaptist studies, who have excellent potential in Anabaptist research and who qualify for OSAP funding. Recipients are chosen based on the following criteria: 

  • Students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at Grebel (grad students in History at Waterloo or in the MTS program at Grebel).
  • Student who quality for OSOTF funding through the Ontario Student Assistance program.
  • Students enrolled in a course that deals with Anabaptist studies generally, but with priority given to courses in History.
  • Students who demonstrate an interest in Anabaptist studies and who have excellent potential in Anabaptist research. 

Size of Award

One award of approximately $1,800.

MCEC/Grebel Pastoral Leadership Award

This award offers full tuition for part-time students who are pastors or other designated denominational leaders in Mennonite Church Eastern Canada congregations or institutions. (Courses at other institutions do not apply).

This award covers full tuition.


Pastoral Training Award

This award is for students in the Applied Studies option who have declared an interest in exploring ministry and/or pastoral leadership. Priority will be given to those who have arranged or plan to arrange an internship (Supervised Experience in Ministry).

Size of Award

The award amounts to approximately $1,255.


Graduate Student Support Fund

This fund supports students in the MTS program who demonstrate scholastic ability and financial need.

Size of Award

The amount of award is variable.


Full-time Tuition Award

All Canadian students or permanent residents are eligible for a full tuition scholarship, for up to six terms of full-time study. A full-time student is registered for three or more courses in fall and/or winter term, or two or more courses in the spring term. This award covers tuition for courses taken at Grebel and is awarded automatically to eligible full-time students.

Size of Award

This award covers full-tuition.


Qualifying Award

This award supports those who have been admitted as “Qualifying” students. The award is for up to 25% of tuition costs for the term/s in which students complete the requirements for eligibility as “Regular” students.

Size of Award

This award covers up to a quarter of tuition.
