Interpreting Ruins in the Country Estate is a free online toolkit developed by heritage professionals and university academics following an RHS funded workshop held at Scotney Castle in 2024. Supported by the Royal Historical Society and the National Trust, the project focuses on the interpretation and care of ruins within British country estates, while offering approaches that may also be relevant in other contexts.
Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives, the toolkit examines the historical meanings of ruins alongside contemporary challenges such as sustainability, climate change, inclusion, and long term conservation. Through thematic discussion, case studies, and practical resources including a decision matrix, it offers guidance for thoughtful and responsible approaches to interpreting ruins across historic British landscapes. The toolkit is now live and available here.
