Abstract

Annotation by Stacey Kursikowski. After looking through the Canadian Built Heritage Research Inventory, I chose the Fredericton Heritage Trust webpage as my focal document. Within this webpage, readers can discover the wonders of Fredericton as it has developed over time. The current state of Fredericton truly began in 1783 when it was founded by the Loyalists. Named after the son of King George III, Fredericton has maintained a small-town atmosphere, while keeping predominant historical buildings and strong architecture, which they adopted from the United States, as well as their British antecedents. Furthermore, this webpage provides outstanding records about heritage buildings within their city that are either significant, have been lost by various means (mainly gutted by fire), and ones that are to be restored. These include churches, shops, homes, courthouses, streetscapes, etc., each of which have pictures and historical reasoning and information attached to them. These documents provide the reader with background information and knowledge about how each property came to be and why it is of great significance within Fredericton. Lastly, this webpage describes the process in which heritage plaques and awards are distributed, and a list of buildings which have already received plaques due to their great significance. Additionally, if ever interested in touring Fredericton, a list of various tours and excursions are available along with contact information for future inquiries. The Fredericton Heritage Trust webpage is beneficial to a wide range of people, from the locals who reside within New Brunswick to those who reside around the rest of the world. This webpage is guided to people who enjoy traveling, exploring new places, and have an interest in historical and architecturally sound buildings. Moreover, this webpage makes traveling within New Brunswick trouble-free by providing viewers with various maps, pictures, addresses, and descriptions. The content of this site is very thorough and demonstrates a strong interest from those who collected the information. What is particularly beneficial to note is that the Fredericton Heritage Trust is run purely by volunteers, people who have a keen interest in their city and want to recognize the history behind it. On the other hand, I found the layout of the site rather bland and not esthetically pleasing. However, in this case I feel that the quality of work is extremely strong and distracts the viewers from the plain, dull layout of the site. In my personal opinion, getting past the poor choice of layout, the content within the site is extremely thorough, yet succinct, when describing how New Brunswick and Fredericton came to be. Additionally, the background information that is provided for hundreds of heritage buildings around the city is phenomenal. It describes the architectural styles, influential residents/uses, important historical dates, and other interesting facts that make it a heritage building. Overall, this webpage is intended for people who enjoy aspects of travel, architecture, and heritage. By having dedicated volunteers, the Fredericton Heritage Trust has provided these people with the information needed to understand and discover Fredericton\’s built heritage.
