Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals: Identifying Critical Steps for Canadian Impact

Dr. Jeffrey Sachs and his wife Dr. Sonia Ehrlich Sachs will serve as discussants on a public panel talk moderated by Associate Vice President, International, Ian Rowlands on the challenges associated with implementing the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals.

Panelists include:

  • Jatin NathwaniOntario research Chair in Public Policy and Sustainable Energy, professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Executive Director of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy
  • Susan Elliott, professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management and Principal Investigator for GLOWING – the Global Index of Wellbeing initiative
  • Larry Swatuk, associate professor at the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development and Research Fellow of both the Balsillie School of International Affairs and the Water Institute
  • Jennifer Clapp, Canada Research Chair in Global Food Security and Sustainability and professor in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability

Rising Nationalism versus Global Cooperation for Sustainable Development

In the era of Brexit, border walls and immigration bans, how does the world come together to achieve Sustainable Development Goals like protecting the environment, eradicating poverty, and providing access to clean water, education and decent work for all? In this provocative talk, Dr. Sachs will explore the dynamic tension between the current rise of nationalism and the pressing social and environmental issues facing the planet today.
