New Venture Creation and Innovation Management

Focuses on the end-to-end process of building successful startups, form opportunity identification through to launch and scaling. This includes developing frameworks for evaluating market opportunities, understanding innovation processes, crafting minimum variable products, and establishing product-market fit. The area emphasizes both theoretical foundations and practical application of startup methodologies. Participants will apply their entrepreneurial thinking skills to examine the need for targeted action to develop validated solutions to global challenges.

Strategy and Market Development

Addresses the strategic aspects of building and growing ventures in competitive markets. This combines competitive analysis, market research, go-to-market strategy, and business model development. The focus is on helping entrepreneurs develop sustainable competitive advantages and effectively position their ventures in the marketplace.

Leadership and Entrepreneurial Mindset

Develops the personal and interpersonal capabilities needed for entrepreneurial success. This includes leadership development, negotiation skills, team building, and entrepreneurial thinking. The area helps students develop resilience, adaptability, and the decision-making capabilities needed in uncertain and rapidly changing environments. Through analyzing real-world problems and issues related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), participants will have opportunity to not only apply problem-solving skills to real-world scenarios and case studies, but to showcase their own entrepreneurial responses to complex problems.

Finance and Resource Management

Encompasses the financial and operational aspects of running entrepreneurial ventures. This includes startup financing, financial modeling, venture capital, accounting principles, and resource allocation. Students learn to develop financial projections, understand funding mechanisms, and make strategic decisions about resource deployment in resource-constrained environments.

The Conrad School of Entrepreneurship and Business is the academic engine for entrepreneurship at the University of Waterloo.
