John Saad
Dr. John Saad, lab instructor for the Nanotechnology Engineering program, has been recognized by the Engineering Society for his ongoing efforts to make fourth-year nano labs interesting, useful and challenging for students. He is one of three instructors honoured for teaching excellence.

Saad’s position as first runner-up for the Society’s winter 2016 Teaching Excellent Award results from nominations by Engineering Society members who appreciate his non-conventional teaching techniques, provision of opportunities for experiential learning, and commitment and dedication to ensuring students’ academic success.

The nominators and members of the society’s Teaching Award Committee recognize Saad’s ability to help students translate theoretical knowledge into practical skills and abilities. His approach to teaching reflects his passion for knowledge and dedication towards his students. They noted that Saad provides challenging design projects that incorporate elements and skills, such as analysis and problem solving, that they can use in the ‘real world.’ They also appreciate that, outside the lab, Saad hosts extra tutorials and help sessions that encourage them to learn and assimilate their knowledge. Congratulations – and thank you – to John Saad, as well the award winner, Derek Wright, and the other runner-up, Derek Rayside, for their contribution to teaching excellence at the University of Waterloo.
