Current Research
My research is predominately in the field of religion and social theory, with a focus on improvisational conspiracy, the overlapping belief systems of apocalyptic Christian thought and conspiracy theories, and the impact of these beliefs on the North American political system. Currently I am a Post Doctoral Fellow with Queen’s University School of Religion working with Dr. Amar Amarasingam on religion, extremism, conspiracy theories, and politics in North America. I am also hold a Definite Term Lecturer position at the University of Waterloo, in the Arts First Program and Religious Studies Department.
In 2021, I completed a Post-Doctoral Fellow position with the Centre on Hate, Bias, and Extremism, working with Dr. Barbara Perry and Dr. David Hofmann. In this position I developed anti-hate and anti-extremism policy for the Canadian Armed Forces. In 2021/22 I was a Post-Doctoral Fellow with the Disinformation Project at Simon Fraser University, working with Dr. Ahmed Al-Rawi, researching disinformation and conspiracy theories in right-wing extremism social media in Canada. During this time, I was also a Research Consultant on the “Promoting Social Cohesion and Resilience to Far-Right Disinformation through Adult Disinformation Literacy” project, working with Dr. Megan Boler at the University of Toronto and Dr. Barbara Perry.
I also have an interest in religion and pop culture, specifically within subversive or marginalized religious movements.
Employment
Sept. 2022–Sept. 2024 Post-Doctoral Fellow: Queen’s University, School of Religion Working with Dr. Amar Amarasingam on a two project to research the implications of convoy movement culminating in an opportunistic moment for both populist political leaders, religious leaders, extremists, and those seeking to dismantle the Canadian government to provide “solutions” to ease these fears through political policies, a resurgence of biblical values, a proposed ethnostate, and potential violence. Our project looks at the historical trajectory of these far-right movements, addresses current trends and growth through an analysis of why people join these movements, and how these groups are financed both through foreign and domestic funding, and provide potential policy recommendations and implications for Canadian politics and society.
Aug. 2022-Aug. 2025 Definite Term Lecturer Arts First Program and Religious Studies – with the University of Waterloo. In this position I teach Arts First courses focused on research, writing, and presentation skills to first year students in Arts/Humanities. Religious Studies is my home department where I teach religious studies courses.
Feb. 2022–Present Advisory Board Member - The Vaccine Uptake Network – Association For Canadian Studies, Metropolis Institute - a network dedicated to improving COVID-19 vaccine uptake and building confidence among newcomer and racialized communities across Canada through two key pillars: research and outreach.
Sept. 2021–Apr. 2022 Post-Doctoral Fellow: The Disinformation Project, Simon Fraser University. Working with Dr. Ahmed Al-Rawi on the Understanding Hate Groups Narratives and Conspiracy Theories in Traditional and Alternative Social Media project. This project empirically examines Canadian right-wing extremism (RWE) narratives, conspiracies, and discourses on traditional and alternative social media. The project not only examines the textual content but also the multimodal discourses such as the use of memes, hashtags, emojis, and videos which, we argue, provide important clues on the way certain hate messages are communicated. Finally, the use of a unique mixed method that involves a networked thematic examination of social media posts as well as a keyword-based and other digital approaches provide richer and more meaningful insight into the nature of Canadian RWE discourses than if only one textual analysis approach is followed.
Sept. 2021–Apr. 2022 Research Consultant. Working with Dr. Megan Boler at the University of Toronto and Dr. Barbara Perry, with the Centre on Hate, Bias, and Extremism on the "Promoting Social Cohesion and Resilience to Far-Right Disinformation through Adult Disinformation Literacy: A Systematic Review and Pilot Assessment of Gaps and Needs" project as a consultant on disinformation, social media, and conspiracy theories.
Sept. 2020–Oct. 2021 Post-Doctoral Fellow: Policy with The Centre on Hate, Bias, and Extremism. Working with the Canadian Armed Forces to develop national policies on anti-extremism within the Canadian Military.
Nov. 2020–Feb. 2021 Consultant – Global National News – I was a consultant for conspiracy theories and Covid, for Global Television Network, and was the expert for a documentary on Covid and conspiracy for Global’s flagship news documentary Series: The New Reality.
