Contest Terms and Guidelines

The Korean speech contest is open to all non-native speakers of Korean. Individuals who were born in Korea are not eligible. Korean-Canadians who were born in Canada are eligible to enter the contest in Division II.

Division of Contestants

Division I: All non-Korean contestants will be grouped in this category.

Division II: Contestants with a Korean background (one or both parents are ethnic Korean) who were born in Canada. Verification that the contestant is Canadian will be required (i.e. copy of passport)

Rules/Guidelines

  1. Content of Speech​

    1. Each contestant may choose to do deliver their speech on one of two topics involving either "My favorite Korean expression and reason" or "The most memorable King Sejong Institute class".

    2. The length of the speech should be two to five minutes maximum.
    3. Speeches must not contain profanity, hurtful comments etc.
  2. Restrictions
    1. No aids may be used while performing your speech. For example: no songs or videos may be used and the use of cue cards and/or cellphones is prohibited.

Prizes and Advancement

  • All prizes will be awarded to each division separately
  • A small prize will be awarded to all participants
  • 1st - 3rd place winners will receive a different prize
  • The videotape of the 1st place winner will be sent to the King Sejong Institute Foundation in Korea
    • The King Sejong Institute Foundation will select all the final contestants through 1st place videotapes they have received from all King Sejong Institutes across the world

How to Apply and Submit Your Speech

  1. Submit an online application form
  2. Submit your speech on the online application form OR via e-mail to Angie Jeong no later than Tuesday, May 20, 2025, 11:59 am.
