Personal Information
Asal was born and raised in Shiraz, Iran. She completed her bachelor’s degree at the Persian Gulf University (PGU) in 2011, where she was ranked as one of the outstanding students graduating among the top of her class. Her interest in research led her to publish two outstanding papers during her bachelor’s degree. She was a Teaching Assistant (TA) during her studies at PGU. Although Asal’s mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and it was her responsibility to take care of her mom, it did not stop her from achieving her dream of pursuing academic studies. Asal started her Master’s degree in Shiraz University in 2011 and she graduated in 2013. With the fact that in Iran the thesis is evaluated and graded by the committee members at the end of the study period, She received an extra grade (19.5 out of 19) because her committee members were amazed by the results she obtained for her thesis. Asal was the only graduate student at Shiraz University in the same year that received the extra grade. Asal moved to Canada with her family in 2013 after graduating from Shiraz University. Unfortunately, she lost her mother in March 2014 but she did not give up on her dream. She was admitted to the University of Waterloo in 2015 for the Master of Engineering program and she started her PhD program in 2016 under the supervision of Dr. MacVicar. In the first year of her PhD program, she developed a software called Erosion Indices Calculator (ErIC) for Beacon Environmental Company located in Guelph, Canada. ErIC is also being used by her colleagues at the University of Waterloo to help with their research.
Asal was invited to be an honorary speaker at a Woman’s Day conference in March 2018 hosted by Iranian Mental Health Centre in Toronto to talk about the hardships she experienced in her life and the strategies she used to not only overcome her problems but also to become a successful woman.
Asal is also interested in Psychology, Computer Programming, Physics and Mathematics. During her free time, she enjoys dancing, exercising, doing makeup and spending time with her family and friends.
