On cycling risk and discomfort

Road risk map that was a key part of our research

While in my master's degree at ETH Zurich, I took a project-based course called "Data Science in Socio-Techno-Economic Systems". A few classmates and I decided to do a project on the safety of cycling in Zurich, making use of extensive open data on bicycle accidents (https://data.stadt-zuerich.ch/) and geomatic data on the positions of streets collected via an API (https://api3.geo.admin.ch/). We combined this and data from insurance claims in order to create a cost-weighted cyclist safety map, and used this map to create a prototype route recommendation tool using breadth-first search.

Our professor approached us after the course suggesting we work towards publication, and helped us to do so. Ultimately, one of my classmates, the professor, and I published our work, and the full paper can be found here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00607-019-00771-y
