The use of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) for groundwater remediation has gained significant interest due to their small size and large surface area. For the past 5 years we have been working on a project to develop and test functional NPs which have the capability of be mobile in porous media but bind to regions that contain a light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL). The image below shows an experiment where functional NPs were injected into a large unsaturated column with the objective to bind to the target PHC zone indicated.
