Michelle Chien
PhD Candidate
Michelle is an aspiring bridge engineer who earned her B.A.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 2019 with a Certificate in Structural Engineering. Under the supervision of Prof. Scott Walbridge, her M.A.Sc. will investigate brittle fracture risk assessment for steel bridges. The project will involve a comparison of existing brittle fracture rules from around the world, a reliability analysis of the current Canadian provisions, and the development of an assessment tool for avoiding brittle fracture in existing structures. She is excited to be collaborating with Prof. Bertram Kuehn for this research, a European expert in this area. In her free time, Michelle dabbles in various art mediums including acrylics, graphite, digital photography, and charcoal. Occasionally, you might also find her at a shooting range.
