Looking for the right supplies to start your studies at the Faculty of Science? This page outlines recommended tools, including calculators, lab gear, and tech essentials. Make sure you're prepared with equipment that meets course requirements by following the guidelines below!
Supplies Information
Required and recommended supplies for Faculty of Science students
Required Supplies
- Basic stationery (pens, pencil, ruler, paper, etc.)
- Scientific calculator.
- An electronic device (or devices), such as a cellphone that can be used for:
- Duo authentication.
- Internet access (for example, live polls and other interactive activities during class).
- Capture images of written work (for uploading to digital dropboxes).
Recommended
- You'll need regular access to a computer. While we offer computer labs and remote access through terminal servers, many students choose to use their own devices.
- Some students prefer taking notes with a tablet and stylus. The type of device is up to you - select what best fits your learning style and needs.
- Sharpies or other brands of glassware markers are extremely useful in most laboratories.
What we provide in first year orientation kits
Listed below is what you will find in your First Year kit at Orientation:
- Science Society branded Sharpie
- Goggles
- Notebook
If you are not attending the Orientation, you will be able to pick up these items from the Science Undergraduate Office (STC 2031) while supplies last. When supplies run out, you can purchase these items at the WStore.
Computer recommendations
To support your studies, we recommend a reliable, mid-range laptop that will last throughout your time here at the University of Waterloo. A Windows laptop is preferred for most Science students, as it offers broad compatibility with required software. While Apple laptops can also work, some tools may be limited or require extra setup.
Phones, tablets, and Chromebooks are not recommended as your primary device.
Please visit the Science Computing web page to learn more information about laptop requirements and how to fix a slow/glitchy computer (Windows).
Science calculator information
The Faculty of Science approves the following calculators for most courses:
- TI-30x II (Either the 'S' (solar) or 'B' (battery) version of this model are acceptable)
- Casio fx-300MS
- Sharp El-531x (El 531XG, 531XH, and 531XT are also acceptable, as they are the same model with different power supplies)
Students can purchase these at either the WStore or ChemStore (ESC 109).
'Pink Tie' Calculators approved by the Faculty of Math may also be allowed - please check their Calculator Regulation page for details.
Note: Programmable, graphing or Wi-Fi-enabled calculators are not permitted unless your instructor says otherwise. For questions, contact your instructor or the Science Undergraduate Office.
Previous 'Blue Goggle' Calculators
'Blue Goggle' Calculators will no longer be sold or distributed starting September 2025. However, if you have one from previous terms, they will remain approved for use in the Faculty of Science.
Please visit the Science Calculator Guidelines page for more information about the Faculty of Science calculators.
Lab safety
Be Prepared
Before each lab, please review the materials and understand any potential hazards. Know the safety rules and emergency procedures. Your safety and that of others depends on them. Specific safety instructions will be provided during your first lab session.
Fire Procedures
Know your lab's fire exit route and procedures. In case of fire, shut down equipment if safe, activate the nearest fire alarm, and evacuate using the stairs - never use elevators.
WHMIS Training
All students must complete WHMIS training before classes begin. Visit the Safety Office website to self-enrol.
Accidents and Injuries
Report all lab incidents to your TA or demonstrator, no matter how minor. Learn the locations of emergency equipment in each lab.
Protective Clothing
Some labs require lab coats, gloves, eye protection, and other safety gear. You'll receive instructions in your first sessions. Supplies are available from Chemistry Stores.
Please visit the Laboratory Regulations page to learn more about safety and regulations in the lab.
