About the Servos Group

Welcome to the research group of Prof. Mark Servos in the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo.

Our group includes a dynamic team of research associates, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate and undergraduate students working on topics in environmental toxicology and environmental chemistry. We focus on understanding how contaminants from human activities impact aquatic ecosystems, with particular emphasis on wastewater, emerging contaminants, and their effects on fish and ecosystem health. Our work also includes wastewater-based surveillance, using wastewater to measure the presence of viruses (e.g., COVID-19) and chemicals such as drugs of abuse.

Our research integrates field studies, laboratory experiments, and advanced analytical and molecular approaches to link contaminant exposure to biological responses. These capabilities allow us to examine effects across multiple levels of organization, from molecular and physiological changes to impacts on individual organisms and fish populations. This integrated approach supports improved understanding, prediction, and management of environmental impacts in freshwater systems.
