Research Interests

In collaboration with Dr. Runqing Jiang of the Grand River Hospital, and Dr. Xu (Shine) Zhang of Cape Breton University, Brian’s research aims to develop a simple, multifunctional nanomaterial for the treatment of human prostate cancer in the form of gold nanoparticle-coated liposomes. Strong interactions between gold and clinical X-Rays, and the enhanced cancer permeability and retention of liposomes makes this platform a superior alternative to current CT contrast agents and allows for a focused enhancement of traditional radiation therapy. The unique physical structure of the gold-coated liposomes also enables the utilization of a localized surface plasmon resonance for experimental photothermal therapies and the triggered release of chemotherapeutics and other nanoparticles.
