Dennis Curry

MSc (Graduated May 2016)

Research Interests

Dennis joined the Servos Group in Fall 2014 after earning his BSc (Hons) at Cape Breton University. His MSc research focused on evaluating gold nanoparticle (AuNP)–doxorubicin conjugates for drug delivery applications, improving the accuracy and understanding of how chemotherapeutic agents interact with nanomaterials. His broader research interests included targeted cancer drug delivery and radiation enhancement using both gold nanoparticle and liposome-based platforms. His MSc work was recognized with the Dean of Science Award (Biology).

His research addressed key challenges in doxorubicin quantification, including non-specific adsorption to labware, and led to the development of a polyethylene glycol (PEG)–based approach to improve measurement accuracy. He also examined the mechanisms of doxorubicin binding to gold nanoparticles, demonstrating that interactions extend beyond simple electrostatics to include coordination and cation–π interactions.

During his graduate studies, he was supported by a Canadian Graduate Scholarship from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, a traineeship from the Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute, and a Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) Nanofellowship. He has since gone on to pursue a career in medicine and is currently a psychiatry resident at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada.
