Prior to joining the Servos Lab, Hoang worked as a Lab Manager at the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit – Centre for Tropical Medicine in Vietnam, where he managed laboratory operations and supported high-containment BSL-3 and SAPO4 facilities working with pathogens including tuberculosis, influenza, and dengue.
Hoang joined the Servos Lab during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he served as a senior technician and also acted as assistant project manager for the University of Waterloo wastewater-based surveillance program. In these roles, he played a central part in coordinating laboratory operations to ensure timely, accurate analysis and reporting of results to Public Health Units, while also supporting QA/QC and workflow standardization across the program.
In this role, his responsibilities included inventory management, ordering supplies, scheduling, safety inspections, biosafety compliance, SOP development, instrument maintenance, and the shipping and receiving of samples. He performed wastewater analysis for SARS-CoV-2, including RNA extraction, qPCR and dPCR analysis, QA/QC, data interpretation, and reporting to municipalities. He also trained and mentored new students and technicians, contributed to method development and optimization, and supported a wide range of laboratory and field activities as needed.
Following the conclusion of the COVID-19 wastewater surveillance program, he transitioned to a new role at the Genomics Sequencing Facility at the University of Waterloo, where he continues to work in molecular and genomic analysis.
