Project

Development of a regional biomonitoring framework for assessing the cumulative effects of human activities on wild fish populations and communities in a watershed.

Research Interests

I have been involved in research at both the University of Saskatchewan (BSc, Honours, Toxicology) and Wilfrid Laurier University (MSc, Integrative Biology) studying the bioavailability and toxicity of metals to aquatic organisms. Through work experience with the global nickel industry trade association, the Nickel Institute (Brussels, Belgium), I have gained insight on how this type of research is currently being used in different European Union chemical legislations. I am now interested in expanding my education and work experience to other (emerging) contaminants (e.g. pharmaceuticals and personal care products). This has brought me to the University of Waterloo, where I have recently started a PhD in biology. I am interested in studying the impacts of municipal sewage effluent and other anthropogenic “stressors” (e.g. agriculture, urban development) on fish populations and communities in freshwater river systems. This will contribute to the overall project objective in developing a regional monitoring framework for assessing the cumulative effects in a watershed. Keegan is now a Scientist with Alberta Conservation and Parks.
