Milica Kecman

MSc Student

Research Interests

Milica joined the Servos Lab in May 2022 as an undergraduate co-op student while completing her degree in Biochemistry at the University of Waterloo. During her time in the lab, she completed multiple co-op terms working on SARS-CoV-2 wastewater surveillance, carrying out all aspects of the workflow, including bottle preparation, sample collection, sample preparation, extraction, and qPCR analysis and data processing. This work played an important role in supporting regional COVID-19 monitoring and public health response efforts.

After completing her undergraduate degree, Milica continued in the lab as a technician, shifting from molecular biology to the analytical chemistry side of the lab. In this role, she supported a range of projects focused on high-risk substances in river water, wastewater, and local fish species using LC-MS/MS. Her work involved sample preparation, method development, and instrument operation, contributing to the generation of high-quality data for environmental research.

In September 2025, Milica began her MSc, where her research focuses on the bioaccumulation of psychoactive drugs in fish species. As part of this work, she is designing and setting up a flow-through exposure system for controlled fish experiments to investigate the uptake and accumulation of psychoactive substances under environmentally relevant conditions. This project bridges environmental chemistry and aquatic toxicology, providing important insight into how these contaminants move through aquatic systems and potentially impact the health of aquatic organisms.
