- Many SDS courses incorporate experiential learning both within and beyond the classroom. Examples include:
- Walls 2 Bridges; students take classes together with inmates from the Grand Valley Institution for Women (this course is possible only every few years on rotation with other schools, code subject to change)
- SDS 370R: International Learning Experience - past CMILE trip to Mexico; in collaboration with the School of Social Work, students spend a week in Mexico combined with local community-service learning on weekends.
- SDS 495R: Research Apprenticeship - work with a faculty member on their research in an unpaid placement, 6-8 hours/week
- SDS 496R: Applied Apprenticeship - class-time + a 60+ hour unpaid placement in a community organization, 6-8 hours/week
- SDS 499A/B: Honours Thesis - intensive research project spanning two terms under the supervision of a faculty member; required for certain graduate programs
- Waterloo’s experiential education certificate program consists of 6 milestones, and gives students in regular (non-co-op) programs an opportunity to develop key professional skills, explore their career options, and market themselves to employers.
- Get access to the same PD courses co-op students take, receive credit for specific volunteer, work or course experiences, and attend workshops that tie it all together.
- Volunteer each term in the Conversation Partner program, where you are matched with a new international student to help them practice English, engage in fun social events, etc.
- Become an International Social Volunteer and support students visiting Renison to learn English over the summer.
- Explore international travel and learning opportunities in Korea, Japan, China and Mexico
- Aka "RIO"!
- Study abroad and complete courses towards your UW degree, while being immersed in a new county and culture.
- Review programs through Waterloo Passport
- Recommended for your 3rd year if pursuing a 4-year degree (i.e. apply in your 2nd year).
- Explore opportunities through RIO or Renison's Student Life/Residence Team, such as being a Peer Leader, Residence Don, or part of RASC (Renison Academic Student Council).
- Share your enthusiasm with future students by volunteering at recruitment events (e.g. Open Houses, You@Waterloo Day, Arts 101 Day, Ontario University Fair, etc.). Connect with Renison's marketing team or UW to learn more.
- Check out SJU in Peru and Beyond Borders, two opportunities offered through St. Jerome’s University College that engage students in service learning abroad. SJU also offers a 12-14 week internship at a local community agency through their Beyond U program.
- Get involved with other on-campus services like Imprint, WUSA, Visitors Centre, Athletic Centre, etc.
- Join a club that fits your interests - you never know what opportunities may exist as a member!
- Explore local volunteer options according to your interests, availability and region through Volunteer Waterloo Region.
