University of Waterloo continues to own innovation among Canadian universities, according the latest rankings released November 1 by Maclean’s magazine.
For the 21st year running, Waterloo was named Canada’s most innovative university. Waterloo was among the top three Canadian universities — and the only one without a medical school — recognized for highest quality, producing the leaders of tomorrow, and best overall university in Maclean’s magazine’s annual reputational rankings.
Among comprehensive universities — those with significant research activity and a wide range of graduate and undergraduate programs, but no medical school — Waterloo placed first for reputation, student awards, scholarships and bursaries, awards for full-time faculty, and social sciences and humanities grants.
From its earliest days, Waterloo has taken an innovative approach to education, says Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor. A university designed to meet the needs of a fast-evolving society, Waterloo’s experiential and entrepreneurial culture enables our students and graduates to lead their fields.
“Year after year, both here and abroad, Waterloo is recognized as one of Canada’s top universities,” Hamdullahpur says. “By remaining steadfastly committed to excellence and impact on quality of life for all, we are leading change through the research we do and the students we graduate.”
Maclean’s isn’t the only rankings body to take note of Waterloo’s record of success.
- In the Globe and Mail Canadian University Report, released in October, Waterloo led 60 Canadian institutions in several key areas, including first-place rankings in:
- Reputation with Employers (A+ for the third consecutive year)

- Co-op/Internships (A)
- Quality of Teaching and Learning (A-)
- For five consecutive years, Waterloo has been named research university of the year in the comprehensive category, in data compiled by Research Infosource, and released in their Canada’s Top Research Universities Report
