Jeremy Bergen's Reflection on his Lectures on Unity in Saskatchewan

As the "De Margarie Lecturer in Reconciliation and Christian Unity," I travelled to Saskatchewan January 21-24 to give not only two different public lectures (one in Regina and one in Saskatoon), but also to speak at an ecumenical chapel service, lead an upper-year undergraduate class in Peace Studies at St. Thomas More College on the theme of "Apologies as Peacebuilding," and give two workshops for church leaders on church apologies for historical wrongs. It was very busy but also very rewarding. Though the weather was cold, I was hosted very warmly and got to see some old friends and meet a lot of new people.

The lectures are named in honour of a beloved priest Fr. Bernard de Margerie whose passion was ecumenism, and it is sponsored by Campion College in Regina, St. Thomas More College in Saskatoon, the Prairie Ecumenical Centre, and the Roman Catholic dioceses. The lectures themselves, on "Christian Martyrdom and the Unity of the Church," are available online, here and here.
