 Fees

The MTS program is primarily a fee per course. As well as the course fee, there are additional graduate study fees that are payable each term, some of which are refundable upon request. University of Waterloo calculates tuition one term at a time. Visit the Tuition Fee Schedule for the fee breakdown per term. Please note that the MTS program is listed as an "On Campus Professional Graduate Program" for both Canadian citizens/permanent residents and international students.

Conrad Grebel offers many scholarships and bursaries to help make your MTS degree affordable. Automatic awards are applied to students' account each term that they meet the eligibility criteria. Applications for the competitive awards are accepted each term, though the majority of funding is dispersed in the fall term.

Full-time Tuition Award Full tuition All Canadian students or permanent residents are eligible for a full tuition scholarship, for up to six terms of full-time study. A full-time student is registered for three courses in fall and/or winter term, or two courses in the spring term. The award does not cover courses taken at other institutions. No application is required for this award, but students from Ontario who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, do need to show some documentation

Graduate Student Support Fund Variable This fund supports students in the MTS program who demonstrate scholastic ability and financial need.
The Jane Plas Scholarship Award Approximately $1000-$1500 This award is for students in the MTS program who have demonstrated academic excellence, are committed to academic and community life and who have completed at least half of the MTS program requirements.
Emerson and Elsie McDowell Theological Studies Scholarship Approximately $500-1000 This award is in recognition of Emerson and Elsie McDowell’s commitment to the ministry of the church, vision for ecumenism and to support of the Masters in Theological Studies (MTS) program in the College. The award is for students in the MTS program who have demonstrated academic excellence, interest in exploring ministry, and financial need. 
Magdalena Coffman Scholarship Several awards of approximately $500 This scholarship supports MTS students who demonstrate scholastic ability and financial need.
Women of MCEC Theological Studies Award Approximately $500-$1000 This award provides direct financial support to those enrolled in the MTS program who are Mennonite and who identify themselves in their UWaterloo Quest account as women, and are interested in a church related vocation. Priority is given to those with financial need.
Jacob H. Janzen Memorial Award Approximately $500-1000 This award is for students doing graduate research on Mennonite faith, history or culture, or students preparing for Christian ministry.
The Clifford Snyder Memorial Bursary Several awards of approximately $500 This bursary assists students who are continuing their pastoral and leadership training for service in the Mennonite church, or other churches, relating primarily, but not exclusively, to Latin America.
The Reimer Scholarship in Theological Studies One award of $5000 over two years This award is offered to a new student beginning full-time in the MTS program who has demonstrated academic excellence. Priority will be given to students entering the thesis option whose primary area of research is theology, especially Mennonite theology.
The Stephen Family Theological Studies Entrance Award Approximately $1500 This award provides financial support for students who demonstrate good academic standing and who qualify for OSAP funding. Priority is given to those in their first term of study.
The Karin Packull Anabaptist Studies Award One award of approximately $1800 This award supports and promotes Anabaptist studies among undergraduate and graduate students who show an interest in Anabaptist studies, who have excellent potential in Anabaptist research and who qualify for OSAP funding.
A. James Reimer Award for MTS Variable This award provides support to full-time students who demonstrate good academic ability and who qualify for OSAP funding.
Mennonite Diversity Award

$5,000 or $10,000 per Master of Theological Studies student per year

This award is designed to make an educational experience at Conrad Grebel University College accessible to Mennonite students from culturally diverse backgrounds.  The intention is to create a student body at the College that is more reflective of the cultural diversity of the present and future Mennonite Church in Canada.

This award is founded by Mary Groh, who invites others with a passion for diversity in the Mennonite Church to contribute to this effort and to this award.

Conrad Grebel’s Director of Theological Studies, requests letters of interest as application for this award prior to May 31, 2025. Please include a brief explanation of your qualifications for this award.

Qualifying applicants will include:

  • Students who are, or whose parents are, new Canadians (since 1975) and attend a Mennonite church, or
  • Indigenous students with a connection to the Mennonite Church.
  • Preference given to part-time students in need of support for living expenses.
  • If there are no qualified domestic students an award can be given to an international student with clear connections to the global Anabaptist-Mennonite church.
MCEC/Grebel Pastoral Leadership Award Full tuition This award offers full tuition for part-time students who are pastors or other designated denominational leaders in Mennonite Church Eastern Canada congregations or institutions. (Courses at other institutions do not apply).
Pastoral Training Award Approximately $1255 This award is for students in the Applied Studies option who have declared an interest in exploring ministry and/or pastoral leadership. Priority will be given to those who have arranged or plan to arrange an internship (Supervised Experience in Ministry).
Qualifying Award Up to quarter tuition This award supports those who have been admitted as “Qualifying” students. The award is for up to 25% of tuition costs for the term/s in which students complete the requirements for eligibility as “Regular” students.

Application and approval process

  1. Review the list of TS awards and their eligibility criteria.

  2. Fill out the TS award application by the deadline set by the department.

  3. Applications will be considered by the Theological Studies department. Nominations will be recommended to the College's Scholarships and Bursaries Committee for review.
  4. If the award is confirmed, the committee will advise the recipient of the award.

Note: Students who have outstanding incompletes extending to more than one term will not be eligible for financial aid.

Application deadlines

  • Spring 2025 term: March 29, 2025
  • Fall 2025 term: May 31, 2025
  • Winter 2026 term: last week of November, 2025

  • Dwight Moody Wiebe Endowment Fund Scholarship
    Available to Mennonite Central Committee alumni enrolled in an accredited graduate school. Apply directly.

  • Study Reserve Fund (“Company of 1,000”), Mennonite Church Canada
    Established to support the training of pastors for the congregations of Mennonite Church Canada. Apply for the Study Reserve Fund directly.
