The future of health IoT in smart cities for supporting healthy aging

Person surrounded with technology

Waterfront Toronto and Sidewalk Labs put out a call to Ontario researchers for proposals to support and enrich the development of the Master Innovation and Development Plan for Sidewalk Toronto in August 2018. The UbiLab submitted a proposal to Sidewalk Labs to complete a scan of the most promising in-home and in community technologies (IOT/Hardware/Software) related to:

1. sustaining health / healthy lifestyles

2. delivering health care services

Consider technologies that support early-detection, health monitoring, personalized support, etc. and provide examples of their application where possible. The team, among 10 successful proposals, was to summarize findings and propose concepts for what healthcare in a smart city, like Sidewalk Toronto, could entail to an improved lifestyle, early-intervention, monitoring and/or remote care delivery. An in-depth look at the latest technologies on the market or are in development that could be used within a Smart City was completed. Over 80 products were reviewed in detail and included in the final report along with use cases to illustrate how they might be used.

The completed report was titled Zero-Effort In-home Health Monitoring Using IoT Technology: Topic 14: In-home and in-community health technologies and delivered and presented to Sidewalk Labs executives in November 2018.
