The Ubiquitous Health Technology Lab (UbiLab), headed by School of Public Health and Health Systems professor Plinio Morita, demonstrated that smart home thermostats can be used to monitor the health of older adults and home patients.
The UbiLab researchers are able to determine typical user patterns including physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleeping, by using remote sensor data from the smart thermostat, Ecobee, and by creating algorithms using software they are developing, called the UbiLab Public Health Surveillance Platform.
