Shahan is a PhD candidate at the School of Public Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. His research interests are focused on the design, development, and implementation of public health surveillance technologies. He is particularly interested in harnessing artificial intelligence (AI)-based ecosystems to generate novel (big) data streams for (digital) epidemiological purposes. Shahan obtained his MSc from Western University in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, where he was involved in a multidisciplinary effort to develop a virtual reality (VR)-based simulation for rehabilitation. Shahan has been awarded the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Doctoral Scholarship for his research at the University of Waterloo.
