Navigation, wayfinding and environmental design

Portrait of Kevin Barton
My primary research interest centres on the underlying processes and pathologies that can influence our navigation performance, and how errors in performance can be decreased through the design of an environment.

My current interest focuses on how the configuration of an environment can affect a person's accuracy at wayfinding through novel environments. Research borne from the fields of architecture and urban planning, known as space syntax, has argued that a significant proportion of our wayfinding behaviour can be accounted for by spatial configuration alone. However, the degree to which visual attention, memory, and arousal can shift this effect around remains unclear.
