Events

This will be the first annual general meeting of the Global Water Futures (GWF) program. Plenaries, project reporting, posters, student events, breakout sessions, and other important GWF initiatives will take place during this time. 

The primary purpose of the GWF inaugural Annual Science Meeting is to provide an opportunity for all GWF researchers and affiliated highly-qualified personnel to gather and share their scientific findings and other relevant activities and outcomes with GWF community and users/stakeholders.

The Water Institute, together with the Canadian Journal of Soil Science, is pleased to sponsor the 2018 Joint Meeting of the Canadian Geophysical Union, Canadian Soil Science Society, Computational Infrastructure in Geodynamics, Eastern Section of the Seismological Society of America & the Canadian Society for Agricultural and Forest Meteorology.

Specifically, the Water Institute has sponsored the Sunday night public lecture "Niagara Falls - Behind the Scenes of the Natural Wonder" by Aaron Thomson, Canadian Co-Chair of the International Niagara Board of Control.

As part of the Water Institute's WaterTalks lecture series, Curtis Richardson, professor of Resource Ecology and Director of the Duke University Wetland Center, presents, "Decoding the Secrets of Carbon Preservation in Peatlands along a Boreal to Tropical Gradient from Minnesota to Peru."

The First International Conference on Water Security will welcome academics, thinkers and practitioners from around the world to present, discuss and highlight key issues and directions for change from scientific and policy perspectives, including data needs and how data can be acquired, successful public and private sector business models in different settings, political opportunities and obstacles, what the expressed human needs are, and where the knowledge gaps exist.

As part of the Water Institute's WaterTalks lecture series, Lovell Endowed Professor Ximing Cai from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will be presenting, "Modelling River Basins as Coupled Human and Natural Systems."

Canadian Construction Association (CCA) Gold Seal Accredited Course

Good geotechnical information is critical for selecting proper trenchless technology, design and determining construction risks and costs. This workshop will discuss the geotechnical investigations and requirements for different trenchless construction methods. It will cover industry’s good practice guidelines and standards for preparing geotechnical reports for preparing geotechnical reports for successful trenchless projects. Case studies will highlight good practices to avoid construction difficulties, project delays and costly construction claims.

As part of the Water Institute's WaterTalks lecture series, Ng How Yong, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore, will be presenting, "Research Activities at the National University of Singapore Environmental Research Institute."

As part of the Water Institute's WaterTalks lecture series, Gregory Baird, President of The Water Finance Research Foundation, will present, "Perspectives on the Sustainable Water Infrastructure Challenge: Engineering, Technology or Financial Crisis."
