Janusz Pawliszyn announced as 2013 CIC Environmental Division R&D Award Recipient

Janusz Pawliszyn.
Dr. Janusz Pawliszyn, a Water Institute member in the Department of Chemistry, will be the 2013 recipient of the Chemical Institute of Canada's Environmental Division Research and Development Award. This award is given for distinguished contributions to research and /or development in the fields of environmental chemistry or environmental chemical engineering, while working in Canada.

Great Lakes Futures Project begins second student recruitment phase - development of alternate scenarios

The Great Lakes Futures Project is begining the student recruitment period for phase two of the Great Lakes Futures Project, the development of alternate future scenarios. Graduate students from universities in the Great Lakes region are invited to apply in this competitive process to research and prepare synthesis papers from January to April 2013 on a specific scenario for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin.

Fish Mutation due to Grand River Water Quality Reported

Mark Servos and his research team in the Department of Biology have found mutations in the rainbow darter fish in the Grand River downstream of the Waterloo and Kitchener water treatment plants. Among the findings was that male fish examined were found to have uncharacteristically large eggs and other female traits.

Request for Proposals for Water Institute-Sponsored Workshop/Symposium

A primary objective of the Water Institute is to support interdisciplinary water research and education. The Water Institute is therefore pleased to offer financial assistance for the development of interdisciplinary water workshops or small symposia that support this objective. Two studies find Alberta oil sands development not a major source of long-distance air and water pollution

Water Institute researchers were among the authors of two recent publications which concluded that oil sands development in Alberta is not polluting the water and air in the Peace-Athabasca Delta area at levels previously thought.
The researchers found that emissions from the oil sands have not increased the levels of metal and organic contaminants travelling to the delta via air emissions.

Trenchless Technology Noted as Green for Business

Trenchless technologies for the installation or restoration of sewer, water main, and other types of piping projects have a lower rate of greenhouse gas emission than traditional methods. Mark Knight, professor, civil and environmental engineering, and executive director of CATT, the Centre for Advancement of Trenchless Technologies, also reported that trenchless methods are more cost effective than traditionl means. Water's Next is an annual collection by Water Canada which celebrates achievements by those in the water scene in Canada. Each year a selection committee reviews the nominations to select the small group to be profiled each year. Those profiled include people, businesses, innovations and collaborative projects that are making a difference in Canada's water scene.

ARCADIS and Golder Associates Graduate Scholarship Applications Now Being Accepted

The Water Institute is pleased to announce that the ARCADIS Graduate Scholarship and Golder Associates Graduate Scholarship are being offered again this fall to graduate students conducting water research. Each scholarship is valued at $5,000. Only one application package is needed to be considered for both scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of scholastic excellence and demonstrated success in water research.
