Title:

Transformations Across the Energy Sector: Past, Present and Future

Abstract:

The Energy Council of Canada has focused its 2014 cross-Canada dialogue on the many dimensions of energy transformation underway across the energy sector. Events have examined the implications of British Columbia's aggressive development of LNG towards an entirely new resource industry for the province, the synergistic development of facilities to capture, transport, and use CO2 in Saskatchewan, and, the transformation in Quebec's transportation sector towards electrification of personal vehicles and use of natural gas for heavy-duty freight. A fourth event explored opportunities for the Canadian energy sector to provide expertise and services to the energy sector abroad. The Council's Energy Summit and WEC North America Region Energy Forum in June was the culmination of the 2014 program. That event explored transformations underway across North America in energy supply and market practices in the electricity and oil & gas sectors, developments in energy policy, and perspectives from governments. This presentation will summarize the highlights and learnings from these events and offer insights on the way forward for transformations in the energy sector in Canada.

Energy leaders across the globe have reported their views on the most important drivers of energy transformations through a recent survey by the World Energy Council. The results from the Canadian respondents differ significantly from the responses provided by their global counterparts. Aspects ranked highest by Canadian respondents are energy prices, the climate framework, unconventional energy sources, regional interconnections and talent. The WEC's uncertainty-impact map for Canada will be compared with the corresponding pictures from energy leaders across North America and the world.

The Energy Council of Canada is a vehicle for strategic thinking, collaboration and dialogue by senior energy executives in the private and public sectors across the country. The Council's mission is to forge a better understanding of energy issues in order to optimally shape the energy sector for the benefit of all Canadians. The Council was a founding member of the World Energy Council in 1923, and coordinates participation in WEC activities and contributes Canadian input into WEC studies designed to enrich global expert knowledge, energy information and policy perspectives.
