Agenda

1) Network storage RFP
Bruce was wondering what everyone else is doing.

AHS – NetApp or Dell

Arts –

Sci – Unknown at this time.

Eng – Looking at Samba solution first… NetApp is expensive so looking at alternatives

2) Samba garden any interest from others
NetApp is a drop in replacement. Samba has changed a lot since the last time and has gained momentum. Backups are an issue. An analysis of what the labs are being used for needs to be examined. There was some talk about keeping faculty and staff on NetApps. Engineering Computing is currently testing the Samba Garden solution and is looking for testers. EC is putting in 1gb. Network cards in all Samba boxes.

3) Replacement for scratch system

The replacement for the scratch system will be in place by September 2003 according to Bruce.

4) Update on UCIST security presentation by Erick and other security issues

The list of !! domain admin accounts now down to 24. To help monitor attack threats on servers there are checks done on services, new files and accounts are done every five minutes. Nevil also suggested checking for increased space usage as an indicator of  a misuse/security breach. Erick is also looking at eventIDs. On the client side need to examine open shares, show local admins and add some other items in the HWINFO command. Hon is going to be adding IPSEC to servers.

April 4, 2003 Erick is going to be presenting to UCIST.

Regarding Norton AntiVirus, only OU admins can log on to install. Will have to add ! account into workstation’s local administrator’s group. NAV still not making .MSI for software distribution.

5) Other stuff

OU admins can now create Group Policy for their OU’s. Other OU’s can use these policies but cannot edit them.

Engineering Computing is almost ready to announce their Linux Lab.
