  • Erick to share news about the Nexus Client Machine Backup Option (NCMBO).

I've been working on a new workstation backup system for offices. It's ready for trials.

All these recent breakins are showing us how much people still use their local hard drive. And it makes sense, the hard drive is fast, big and convenient.

    My backup system is

    • unobtrusive
    • extremely secure
    • automatic
    • inexpensive

My system watches the user's hard drive for changes - it doesn't have to walk the directory trees or do MD5's, it knows when the files are changed automatically and instantaneously.

The changed files are logged in memory, and once or twice a day, the modified files (excluding exclude files) are backed up into a zip compressed file.

That file is encrypted with a one time password, and the password is encrypted using public key technology using the nexus ad. The encrypted zip file is then uploaded to a fileserver (or two) with RAID'ed hard disks.

The cool thing is, only the user knows the password which can decrypt the one-time password which can decrypt the data. This system doesn't expose their files to anyone.

The system also is a standard network client, it doesn't open any ports on the local workstation.

Also, the password can have friend fields, so 1 friend can also be able to decrypt, or you can require 2 friends (each with half the password). The system is very flexible.

Nexus keeps user data owned by the userid on the local hard disk, whereas network applications are owned by the system. So we instantly know if we are looking at user data (need exclusion lists if they install own exes)

The new cerberus will use the same disk monitorring features.

  • As agreed to, we will be moving to the new nexus management model for the new term.
  • Changes to Nexus Active Directory
  • Windows XP SP2 to be installed on Nexus client machines via SUS for the start of next term.
