Erick (emergency meeting tomorrow at 10AM)

  • a special WNAG meeting to wrap up discussion on the proposed Nexus management structure.
  • We now have technical solutions for every technical issue that has been raised during our extensive consultative process. I will provide more details tomorrow.
  • In some cases, solutions (such as reading other people's GPOs) may involve using new and improved tools (eg. GPMC new in Server 2003), or new practices. I believe all that is required is that the *functionality* is still available, and I think the new solutions are better for both security and documentation.
  • I want to ask the following questions:
    • do we officially accept this model and agree to implement it?
    • since all stated issues are solved, can we implement it now?
    • are there any objections to holding a secret ballot to elect the two remaining (initial) emergency accounts
  • I think we have worked out most of the kinks in the new model and it is technically capable of everything.
  • If we decide to adopt it, we can flick the switch right away, which is what I would recommend. Then, next week's meeting we could work out any new issues, etc. Undoubtably, there will be minor things that need a second set of eyes.
  • For example, Shawn noticed that the new-styled! account couldn't do certain specialized things with Symantec Antivirus server. By sharing that experience, we found that the workstation MMC is fully capable, just don't attempt to run the operation from the NAV server with your new !!account.
  • Daniel and Lowell had some discoveries too, and we have taken steps to rectify the situation.
  • This is an opportune time for several reasons. The best one is that now is not the end of term, if we are slowed down for a few hours to figure something out, it's not as critical as the start of term or the end of term.
