Windows 2003 DC upgrades

  • Hon implemented 1 new 2003 Server DC (Madoka) and upgraded 2 others from Win2k over the holidays. This leaves one to be completed (Grandis).
  • Nausicaa has been given many AD roles and will be moved to sit off Math’s 5500 router
Bruce recommended alias for the DC’s, so roles can be switched and the alias pointed to the new place rather than change scripts every time a role switches places
  • Mention of re-install of software in various labs and on the podium workstations. The link to the DC upgrades was mentioned, but may not be direct cause.
  • In future, any changes will be communicated. If they’re previously known than an email detailing completed changes will be sent to WNAG’s list.

Local admin accounts

  • Steph discussed the problem of a particular software package and how the renaming of the local admin account were related
  • Other faculties have changed Admin account names periodically without peril.
Basically a hit and miss issue and software specific
  • Ray writes “Readme.txt” files for applications with specific issues. Check in the root MSI directory for info before deploying via GPO.

Quest authentication and NEXUS

  • Agreed to enhance current scratch so that users can force password change on NEXUS using their ADS account. The account will be authenticated and the user will change their current password, it will not sync the password as this was deemed better functionality.

Math test accounts

  • Request for math test accounts was only granted by Arts and ES. The ES accounts have since expired
  • The problems with accounts may be solved using the above quest-authentication.

USB keys

  • Discovery that slight system changes seem to make a big difference in USB key detection and use.
  • Windows 2000 seems to not like keys natively and needs drivers
  • Recommend using v2.0 USB keys and to ensure the device can be easily plugged into system (footprint issues)

ES N: Drive

  • Implemented 650mb per student on space
  • Hardware is RAID 5 3ware device
  • Done for relatively inexpensive through ES Endowment funding

RDP and firewalls

  • Recommend to officially promote RDP port 3389 keep open in security and firewalling efforts around campus
  • Most RDP users have minimal “open” systems, then leapfrog to more secure systems from that (like servers).
