Agenda

Select Nexus domain administrator

Daniel Delattre is currently one of the four Nexus Domain administrators. Daniel will be changing positions shortly as he moves from AHS to Engineering Computing. The four Nexus domain account administration model was adopted on November 11, 2004 and specifies that there are to be four domain admins; two from Engineering Computing and two from outside.

  • Jim Johnston was selected as the second external Nexus domain administrator.
  • It was suggested that Daniel maintain his domain credentials in his new position and the group will review this in a month or so to see if this is warranted.

Nexus administration documentation

Discussion on how to improve overall Nexus administration processes, tips and techniques.

  • Tim will resurrect the Nexuslog Mailman knowledgebase tool. It was created last year and not heavily used. This tool will be opened up to all university of Waterloo Nexus administrators. The goal of this tool is to act as a searchable repository where Nexus administrators can deposit informal step-by-step recipes, how-to's, problem fixes as well as a place for documenting historical changes such as modifications to policy.
  • Steph will set up a Nexus administrators' Twiki. A slightly different tool for recording more formalized Nexus admin documentation that allows for collaborative authoring and updating.

Workstation setting

  • Erick will develop a workstation setting that will be used to differentiate between public and private machines. This may be used to allow for different behaviour when a user moves from their private office to lab or podiums machines. It could also be used when enumerating workstations for various queries. It may be advantageous to know which machines are office machines and which are public workstations.

Science Netapp upgrade

  • Science has upgraded their Netapp (Scifile) from a model F720, NetApp Release 6.5.1R1 to a model FAS250, NetApp Release 6.5.3H1P4.

Engineering Macintosh

  • Engineering Computing has purchased a Macintosh to experiment with active directory support for Macs. Machine currently authenticates against Nexus AD.
  • Architecture Macs bind directly to Nexus AD.
  • Environmental Studies Macs use a third party product called Mac Admin.
  • Steve Carr also mentioned that there are Linux workstations authenticating against Nexus AD.

USB keys

  • Jim reported some USB key users experienced problems in Math labs and was wondering if anyone else was experiencing similar problems. Consensus of the group was that they were not seeing these problems and recommended updating USB drivers.

Math/CS password change problem

  • Jim (Math) and Stephen Nickerson (CS) reported problems with the password change option on the Nexus signon screen. Password changes were not filtering to UNIX components. Erick suggested two solutions: either a Pam on UNIX or a change in the Nexus signon screen. Math and CS opted for the Pam solution.
