Meeting discussions

Symantec license expires end of August 2008

IST is starting a project to look at antivirus software, specifically to answer do we need to renew the license that is expiring at the end of August 2008.

more SAV

Symantec not patching in Bill and Carlos' area in Accounting.

Lab rebuilds

April is the time of year when many labs are rebuilt. Rebuilding of labs is still the best way to improve performance of Windows by getting rid of unnecessary historical garbage data. Specifically ES is looking at rebuilding starting April 28th and requires SPSS 16 to be available for next term (licensing issues again).

AHS will be upgrading its labs this summer; Does someone have experience with green computing or recommendations?

Long logins

It appears as if rebooting is no longer works in fixing long logins, but it still is not reproducible.

Related to the long logins are software introduced delays caused by Symantec Antivirus and Windows Search. Erick is looking at making a tool available which will reduce the priority of these tasks so that it won't affect the user as much.

Nevil as part of his investigation took a look at the logs and will make summaries available to the group.

WSUS Stuff

Tim - Is there a way to clean up WSUS automatically? Daniel question we believe.

SSL and WSUS not working in Eng. currently. Tim has a command that should fix it and will forward it Hon etc.

AHS - On various computers WSUS rebooted but the computer did not restart correctly. Machines became crippled and only a rebuild fixed the problem. Steph - would regfix have worked?

Vista only drivers

FES - Some laptops do not have XP drivers available so for personal laptops FES has been running XP in a virtual machine in order to run software such as ArcGIS until such time as a native Vista version becomes available.

Terminal server problems

Licensing problems are related to the roaming nature of the license. The current licensing cannot be changed to per computer so a regedit key change (deletion) is necessary for some clients.

Next meeting scheduled for May 21, 2008.
