Agenda (PDF) items this month

Software update (Daniel)

  • Daniel announced he will include in Nexus Common Services the tool that can prioritize Windows services such as indexing and Windows Desktop Search
  • Nexus Common Emergencies client has been deployed to Engineering Nexus and ADS and will now be distributed to all Nexus workstation.
  • Just received new OnBase .msi and will be repackaging. Daniel will also make a standalone version for Math.
  • There are a couple of new programs, WritenCite and Ebrary Reader Active X that will be part of Nexus Common Apps.
  • Upgrades for next term will be Matlab 2008B, the next version of SPSS and for the Nexus Common Apps the latest Firefox.

Vista

  • Lowell asked how many people are using Vista and how much Vista development are people doing?
  • AHS has converted all their public labs to Vista.
  • Hon reported he has been working on Server 2008 in Nexustest domain.
  • Engineering Computing will be converting a lab to Vista
  • Others reported that they have some workstations/laptops with Vista
  • Lowell will add a Vista section to the Nexus Wiki
  • There was a query whether the move to Vista would require a domain name change as was done in previous OS upgrades. (Watstar ran DOS, Polaris ran Windows '95) Consensus was there was not enough change in the network infrastructure to warrant a name change.
  • A problem was reported with printer driver updates that regular users cannot authorize these changes.
  • There was a question about how many Vista clients there are in ADS? (Post meeting content: Answer 105)

USB media alert

  • Erick wrote a program that will check for attached USB devices when users log off so that they do not forget their memory sticks and other USB items. If media is found an alarm will played through the pc speaker for ten seconds.
  • It was suggested that this alert not be enforced on staff/faculty machines since these clients routinely leave USB media attached on their private machines. Perhaps the program not run on machines with the "Office" setting.

  • He will make the report available to WNAG for comments prior to the UCIST presentation.
