IE8

  • there was discussion about the release timetable for IE8 from Nexus WSUS server
  • consensus was to wait till University of Waterloo corporate applications were ready for the new browser

Endpoint Project (Stephen Markan)

  • the Endpoint project has selected Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 as the university anti virus solution. Other vendors on the short list were Sophos and Trend Micro.
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager servers have been set up in Engineering Computing and IST
  • SEP11 allows for distributed management so the organizations can control policy and client versions in their departments without having to install a full server
  • testing of managed client software is being done in both Nexus and ADS. Home client versions are currently available from Tim Farrell's home page. WNAG members are invited to try one of these home clients and provide feedback to the Endpoint project.

Cleanup of apps servers

  • AHS App server had disk errors
  • there is a lot of out-of-date software on the app servers, can people please remove old software

IST update

  • deploying three applications, Symantec Endpoint Protection 11, Firefox 3.0.11 and Adobe Reader 9.1.2. Will deploy new Emerg client once obtained from Engineering Computing.

Engineering computing update

  • looking at Windows 7 and virtual servers
  • Erick has a tool for migrating computers between domains

CS update

  • Xming software has been deployed to podium computers to replace Xwin32 program

Environment update

  • moving staff and faculty to Exchange (Connect) this summer
  • there is a new program being setup in Huntsville

Math update

  • upgrading to Office 2007
  • working on problem with Adobe pro
  • testing Windows 7

Arts update

  • new Fine Arts lab in ECH
  • Conference Center is calling Arts for Nexus accounts
  • Arts Computing Experience camp starting June 29, 2009

Science update (Stephen Markan)

  • plan to encourage faculty members to join Nexus and looking for suggestion to aid in this process

AHS update

  • undergrad and grad labs have been migrated to Symantec Endpoint Protection 11. Will be deployed to staff and faculty workstation on July 2, 2009.
  • moving staff and faculty Exchange (Connect) this summer

Summer meetings: July & August

  • there was agreement not to meet again till September unless something comes up that warrants the group to get together

New Chair and Secretary

  • Nevil is the new secretary and Bernie is the new chair

Next meeting scheduled for September 16th, 2009 unless deemed necessary.
