Celebrating student excellence at Fall convocation

Hundreds of graduating engineering and architecture students recently celebrated the end of their current academic journey as they received their University of Waterloo degrees at convocation.

With family, friends and the Faculty of Engineering and School of Architecture community in attendance, 102 undergraduate, 224 Master's and 66 PhD students crossed the stage during their Saturday afternoon convocation ceremony on campus. 

“Each of you are coming to the end of an educational journey,” said Dr. Mary Wells, dean of Waterloo Engineering, "that is unique to you and will begin the next journey – one that must likewise be tailored to suit you and rooted in who you are,” said Dean Mary Wells from the podium. “The mental resilience, versatility and academic ability you’ve honed at Waterloo will allow you to go forward confidently, knowing you can handle whatever comes next.”

Waterloo’s president and vice-chancellor Dr. Vivek Goel reinforced that our new graduates are “among the future leaders and change-makers who can help address the world’s largest crises and build a better future for humanity and our planet.”

Convocation also marked the recognition of several remarkable members of the Waterloo Engineering community who received the following prestigious awards and distinctions.

Honorary doctorate recipient

Dr. Weiya Xu, a highly acclaimed researcher in engineering rock mechanics, received an honorary degree at the Faculty of Engineering's ceremony on Saturday, October 21, 2023.

An honourary doctorate is one of the highest recognitions of the University and is bestowed to honour individuals whose character and extraordinary intellect, creativity and service to society set a standard of excellence that merits this honour.

Alumni Gold Medal

Selected for their outstanding academic performance in a Master's program, Seung June Lee (BASc’ 23, mechanical and mechatronics engineering) is the 2023 alumni gold medal recipient for the Faculty of Engineering.

Dr. Tao Guo (PhD' 23, mechanical and mechatronics engineering) was selected as a finalist for his outstanding academic performance in a doctoral program.

Dr. Tao Guo (PhD ’23, mechanical and mechatronics engineering) is one of six doctoral graduates highlighted for their exceptional research throughout their PhD journey.
